Athletic Eligibility

Your ability to become a member of any high school sport team in LAUSD is based upon a number of factors but one of the most important is your academic eligibility. LAUSD requires a minimum 2.0 GPA (Grade Point Average), or a certain number of grade points, in at least four (4) classes to be eligible to play a sport. Your final report card at the end of each semester and midterm report card (fall and spring) is what is typically used to determine your eligibility depending upon what season your sport falls under. You MUST also now have at minimum 20 credits per semester in order to be eligible.

Calculating one's GRADE POINTS for eligibility is rather simple just follow these steps:

1.       Figure out how many total points you have for all of your classes, in which you received a letter grade, by adding together the point values. (See the point scale below)

2.       Once you have added together all of your grades and have a sum number, check below to see if that number meets the minimum eligibility requirements

Point Scale

A = 4 points

B = 3 points

C = 2 points

D = 1 point

F = no points

If you have 6 classes then you need a minimum of 12 points. If you have 7 classes you need a minimum of 14 points. If you have 8 classes then you need a minimum of 16 points.

Here is a Sample Report Card

Classes Grades Point Value
English 10A C 2
Intro to Art A 4
Geometry A B 3
US History A C 2
P.E. A 4
Biology A D 1

Number of Classes = 6
Total Grade Points Earned =  16
Eligible to Play?  YES!

{Student needed 12 points minimum to be eligible and he/she has 16 points}

* Athletics GPA can only count 1 athletics course per semester into the GPA eligibility if a student is taking more than one course.
